So far, our Bargain Buys series has concentrated on deals under $100K. However, we couldn’t resist exploring the 1979 Cessna Skylane RG that emerged in the listings this week. It’s rare to find many 182s priced below $150,000, so we decided to take a closer look.

The 182 series, known for its combination of utility and accessibility for every pilot, remains perpetually popular, and this 182RG is no exception. The owner has possessed this model since 2005 and has upgraded to a Cessna P210, which offers a bit more speed and altitude capacity. Nevertheless, the 182RG for sale has 4,680 hours on the airframe and a commendable IFR package in the panel.

So, why is it being sold for $125,000? The engine has flown well beyond its Time Between Overhauls (3,256 hours!), so you’ll likely need to budget for a new one. This will add approximately $60K to $75K for a new Lycoming O-540 powerplant, unless you opt for a less costly alternative. It also has a certain amount of damage history, specifically a gear-up landing in 1984, which is recorded in the airframe and engine logs.

But for the appropriate buyer, this could be a feasible path to owning a Skylane.
